Big Bear Lake West is situated between the lake and the National Forest on the west side of Big Bear Valley and runs along the south shore, from the dam through Boulder Bay. Properties here are a unique mix of rustic cabins on forestry leases, mountain homes, and lake front estates. The area has an abundance mature pine trees nestled among huge boulders and great views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

The west end of the valley is a nature lovers paradise and it’s easy to catch a view of shorebirds and water fowl, such as great blue herons, sea gulls, white pelicans, Canadian geese, coots, mallards, wood ducks, grebes, teals, bald eagles and ospreys. Castle Rock Trail is one of the more popular hiking destinations in the valley and the views from on top of the mammoth rock outcropping are some of the best in Big Bear. Area landmarks include China Island, a privately owned vacation home consisting of individual rooms with an oriental theme situated on its own island, accessible only by boat.
Big Bear Lake CA, Dam 1908
The Big Bear dam, originally built in 1885 and rebuilt 250 feet downstream in 1911, is the main feature of this area and is responsible for turning this once alpine meadow and stream into one of California’s most popular recreational lakes. This part of Big Bear receives more snowfall than other areas of the valley and snow typically lasts longer here due to the proximity of the mountains and the low sun in winter. Some of Big Bear Lake’s best fishing is found in the local waters and the well known “Trout Alley” is just offshore.
