The Village of Big Bear Lake was the center of commerce early in the Valley’s history with Bartlett’s Store and the Pine Knot Lodge. Early industry included logging, fishing and tourism.

The resort City of Big Bear Lake was founded in 1980 and is the only incorporated city in the Big Bear Valley. The city is bordered by the Big Bear Dam on the west and Division Road on the east, the national forest on the south and Big Bear Lake on the north. Popular neighborhoods include Boulder Bay, Metcalf Bay, Eagle Point, Ironwood Estates, and parts of Fox Farm and Moonridge. The village and the areas along Big Bear Boulevard are home to most of the shopping, dining, and commercial businesses. Big Bear Lake owns the distinction of being Southern California’s largest recreational lake.

As of 2010, there were 5019 people, 2,187 households, and 1,494 families residing in the City of Big Bear Lake. There are 9,705 housing units of which 6,220 properties are seasonal or recreational use. The home ownership rate in Big Bear Lake is 61.4%.

There are lakefront homes along the south shore and on Eagle Point for those who enjoy summer activities and the properties convenient to Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are popular among people looking to enjoy the winter activities.
