Moonridge Neighbors

The Moonridge neighborhoods, comprising High Timber Ranch, Upper Moonridge and Lower Moonridge, is also home to the Moonridge Animal Park. This popular attraction is located across from Bear Mountain Ski Resort. The Park began in response to a forest fire back in 1959. Orphaned and imprinted animals that couldn’t be released back into the wild needed an alpine facility.

One of the Parks first residents was a stranded, thirty pound, black bear cub. Early inhabitants also included a bobcat and mule deer.

In 1960 the property was given a fifty year lease and the next year they became part of the San Bernardino County’s Park and Recreation District. The Animal Park currently resides on a 2.5 acre parcel of land. Big Bear Lake’s altitude (7,000+ feet) and alpine environment makes the Park unique in the United States.

Today the Park offers educational programs geared toward showing the human impact on mountain wildlife. Docents use non-releasable wildlife in hundreds of classes.

If you would like to visit the Moonridge Zoo, their winter hours are Monday through Friday 10AM to 4PM and 10AM to 5PM on weekends. Admission is $9.00 with discounts for seniors and children. Children under three years old are free. Group tours can be arranged two weeks in advance.
