The area known as “Erwin Lake” is named for one of the Big Bear Valley’s earliest ranching families, and is located on both sides of State Hwy 38, at the easternmost end of the Valley. Erwin “Lake” itself is a normally dry lake bed within the community.
The homes in Erwin Lake are located mainly within a mostly flat valley, surrounded by modest hills to the north and west, and the rugged peaks of Sugarloaf Mountain to the south. Vegetation in the area is largely ironwood and sage, with pine trees taking over on the mountainsides in the distance.
The Erwin Lake area is home to the popular developments of Wildhorse Estates, the rural/equestrian Hamilton Estates development, and the upscale Meadowbrook Estates.
The central and largest area of Erwin Lake offers modest homes on small lots; some of the streets are unpaved. A newer subdivision at the southwestern edge of the area features larger parcels, paved and maintained roads, and medium-size custom homes.
To the north, the Shay Meadow area adjoins Erwin Lake, and there is a sprinkling of acreage parcels with large ranch-style homes and equestrian facilities. On the adjacent hillside, a handful of exclusive large custom homes overlook the Erwin Valley. Both of these areas offer easy access to nearby trails for hiking and horseback riding.
Homes in Erwin Lake range from compact chalets and Gambrels, to medium-size one and two-story designs. Prices are from the very moderate to mid-range, making it an ideal area for the family just starting out in home ownership. Utility services to the area are provided by Big Bear City Community Services District, the City of Big Bear Lake, Southwest Gas, and Bear Valley Electric.
The area offers a newly renovated family-oriented park with picnic facilities and play equipment. Just off Hwy 38 in Erwin Lake is also “The Ranch,” operated by the Parks and Recreation District, offering tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. While there is no business district in Erwin Lake, it’s just a short drive to the commercial area of Big Bear City.
With affordable pricing, a variety of home styles, easy access year ‘round and a cheerful sunny setting, Erwin Lake is a great location for family living, starter cabin, or retirement home.
